Why Studying the Old Testament

The Foundation of the Bible. When we study The Old Testament sets the stage for the New Testament. It reveals God’s character, His promises, and His plan for redemption. I always said they go hand by hand. You can't study one and forget about the other. It Points to Jesus Christ and also reveals God's Covenants. Through covenants with people like Abraham, Moses, and David, we see how God faithfully relates to humanity and prepares the way for the New Covenant in Christ. It teaches us about Faith and obedience. The stories, laws, and wisdom literature provide timeless lessons about trusting God, living righteously, and growing in spiritual maturity. It shows God's justice and mercy. The Old Testament reveals both the seriousness of sin and the greatness of God’s mercy—a truth still relevant today.  It Strengthens our understanding of the whole bible. You cannot fully grasp the message of the New Testament without knowing the Old. The two parts of the Bible form one unified story. In conclusion studying the Old Testament helps us know God better, understand Jesus more fully, and grow deeper in our faith

Hi Yarisis, thanks for starting this conversation. I just completed the lesson and also the quiz and headed here to see what's going on. And I have to say that in my 33 years of ministry I got to know the technicalities of how the Old Testament relates to us today. Of course, I always accepted by default that the OT is applicable to us also today but it was interesting to learn the connection of it after going through, Why Study the Old Testament. I am literally grateful for this course and for this ministry.

Hi Yarisis, isn't it mind-blowing every time you see a shadow of Christ in the Old Testament! Just seeing prophesies of Christ fulfilled thousands of years later and unravelling the numerous times in the Old Testament that tell ancient stories pointing directly at Christ w ho was to come...simply beautiful. I agree with you, one cannot fully appreciate the significance of the New Testament without an understanding of the Old Testament and how the two weave together seamlessly. What a blessing!

Thank you for sharing! About a year ago, I was having a conversation with a friend who characterized the God of the O.T. as harsh and Jesus in the N.T. as loving and full of grace. I gently explained to her the very truth you have shared in your post. She is a believer. Yet, through our brief conversation she reminded me of why it's so important to read the O.T.
